Burnt Bacon, Piano Practice, and Books Organized By Color

This book is feeding my re-obsession with actually practicing the piano. I’m suddenly dying to find a piano teacher! And a piano duo partner!! Both of which have proven very difficult to find, at least in my immediate area. I could probably find a piano teacher way downtown by the universities, but I’d like somewhere I could go more easily during the day.

Meanwhile, we made some updates in the studio this weekend. Put up the Valentine’s lights (is it too soon?!!), the magnetic strip on top, and the little mesh bins for stickers, pencils, etc.

Too cute. And that’s my handwriting on the chalkboard. If you knew me, you’d know that’s super impressively legible!!!!!

burnt the bacon

Here’s what happened while I was trying to squeeze in a few extra minutes of practice in between CrossFit and breakfast… I BURNT THE LAST TWO PIECES OF BACON IN THE HOUSE.

Working through this ghastly section. Tucking the 1&5 under at the very end is extremely tricky!!!

Here’s a little video of me, making some progress but the LH sounds so clumsy. You can see that tuck under, the little pinky pluck right at the end before I hop down to the bass.

While I was working, Kevin made my day by crafting a little bookshelf in the pink room.

color coded books

I promptly organized the books by color. Why do I have so many BLUE books??! I despise the color blue. I have an unhealthy aversion to the color, but I’m pleased that pink and orange have at least a decent showing.

What do you practice? It’s never too late to start. January has been a killer month for adult beginners in my studio. :) I’ve also been practicing my Spanish (28 day streak!), and I really want to learn how to quilt… and braid my hair. A nice assortment of skills.

Do you think practicing an instrument (or other skill) is an inherently fun activity? I read something about it while doing “research” for my business this weekend. The truth is, practicing piano is not an inherently fun activity. The students who “just want to have fun” usually ends up quitting within the first two months. To me, “just having fun” is playing and making music at your current ability. To improve and reach beyond that? That’s work, i.e., practice.  — Source: piano lessons & perseverance I usually enjoy practicing, but slow practice does get on my nerves.

Do you like books organized by color? A practical defense of it here. :)
